Sinmumun Gate 신무문

Description

Title:
Sinmumun Gate 신무문
Caption / Description:

Sinmumun (신무문) is the northern gate of Gyeongbokgung (경복궁) Palace, Seoul (서울), South Korea (대한민국).

It was built in 1433, the 16th year of the reign of King Sejong the Great (세종대왕). The gate was given its name 'Sinmumun' by King Seongjong (성종) in 1475. The name is a combined form of the Chinese characters '玄武' for Hyeonmu (현무), a legendary animal that guards the north.

Sinmumun was destroyed during the Japanese invasion in 1592, then was rebuilt in 1865 when King Gojong reconstructed Gyeongbokgung.

The gate was closed in 1961, following the May 16th military coup that put Bak Jeong-hee (박정희) in charge of South Korea. Despite concerns over security, as the gate faces the Blue House (the presidential residence), Sinmumun was re-opened in September 2006 thanks to the insistence of president Roh Moo-hyun (노무현).
