Geoncheonggung Residence (건청궁) was built in 1873 by King Gojong, 5 years after Gyeongbokgung was rebuilt. Located in the northern part of Gyeongbokgung, the buildings were constructed and layed out in the style of a typical scholar's residence, except for a few ornate decorations. Built to the north of Hyangwonji pond, the Geoncheonggung residence was designed as a place where the king and queen could relax in peace and quiet.
King Gojong and his wife Queen Myeongseong stayed in Geoncheonggung frequently. When not staying there, portraits of preceding kings were housed there instead. Queen Myeongseong was mudered at the residence by Japanese agents in 1895. After this event King Gojong left the palace in January 1896, never to return.
Like much of Gyeongbokgung and other Korean cultural properties, Geoncheonggung was destroyed by the Japanese during their occupation of Korea in 1909. The current buildings were reconstructed, and opened to the public in 2007.
Shown here are two of the buildings comprising part of Geoncheonggung - Jeongsihap (정시합; 正始閤), and Nokgeumdang (녹금당; 綠琴堂).
