Visitors enjoy Gwanghwamun Plaza (광화문 광장) in central Seoul (서울), South Korea (대한민국).
From here you can see a small section of the flower carpet, planted with 224,537 flowers, one flower for each day from Oct 28th 1394, when Seoul was made the capital of the Joseon dynasty, until August 1st 2009, when Gwanghwamun Plaza was officially opened.
Behind the flower carpet is a grass and ivy Haechi (해치), or Haetae (해태). The Haechi, or Haetae, is a legendary fire-eating dog, used to protect buildings from fire, and now the mascot for Seoul.
Behind that, workers hurriedly prepare the platform for the statue of King Sejong the Great (세종대왕), due to be unveiled on October 9th, Hangeul day. King Sejong was the inventor of Hangeul, the Korean script, which was designed so as to be easy for even commoners to learn.
Then further down the plaza is the statue of Admiral Yi Sun-sin (이순신 장군), Korea's most famous naval commander. Left to right can be seen the buildings: Kyobo Life Insurance Building (교보생명 사옥); Ilmin Museum of Art (일 민미술관); Dong-A Ilbo Headquarters (동아일보 본사); Seoul Finance Center (서울 파이낸스 센터); Seoul Daily Newspaper Headquarters (서울신문 본사); Seoul Plaza Hotel (서울플라자호텔); Hanhwa Insurance Headquarters (한화손해보험) . The large building on the right is the Chosun Ilbo Headquarters (조선일보 보험).
