Gwanghwamun Plaza was added to the center of Sejongno in 2008, with construction complete in August 2009. The addition of the Plaza reduced Sejongo from a total of 16 lanes to 10 lanes, at a cost of ₩47 billion. The plaza is named after the Gwanghwamun southern gate to Gyeongbokgung palace at the northern end of Sejongno.
