Admiral Yi Sun-sin Fountain

Admiral Yi Sun-sin Fountain

Description

Title:
Admiral Yi Sun-sin Fountain
Caption / Description:

The Admiral Yi Sun-sin Fountain (이순신 분수) in Gwanghwamun Plaza (광화문 광장), central Seoul (서울), South Korea (대한민국).

The fountain is also known by the name “Fountain 12.23“ (분수 12·23), with 12 being the number of ships Yi Sun-sin used to defeat an opposing Japanese force of 133 vessels, and 23 being the number of battles Yi fought and won. There was controversy over this name though, as 23rd December is the birth date of Akihito (明仁), the current Emperor of Japan.

The fountain surrounds the statue of Admiral Yi Sun-sin, who is Korea's most famous Naval commander. Yi fought against the invading Japanese in the late 16th Century, winning every battle he fought in, and inflicting heavy losses on the Japanese navy.

The fountain is over 17 metres wide, and 68 metres long, with 228 sharp jets, and 136 ground jets. The fountain shoots water up to varying heights, and is a favourite with children on hot days.
