Poplar Hawk-moth (Laothoe populi) caterpillar

Description

Title:
Poplar Hawk-moth (Laothoe populi) caterpillar
Caption / Description:

Caterpillars have well developed mandibles for cutting through leaves, with maxillae situated underneath the jaws for guiding the food into the mouth. The maxillae also contain taste cells, and can detect whether the food is appropriate (many species only eat one particular type of plant).

The Poplar Hawk-moth caterpillar feeds mainly on Poplar and Aspen, but will also feed on a variety of other trees.
