Cerastium fontanum (Common mouse-ear chickweed) flower and flower buds. When the flower buds first appear they can be quite tightly packed together (as seen here). As the flowers start to emerge they spread further out from one another.
The flower has 5 white notched petals, the notch cutting down about one third of the length of the petal. The sepals are green and hairy on the underside, with a red tip. The flowers have 10 stamens (white anthers with yellow pollen) and 5 styles (white stigmas). The centre of the flower and bases of the petals are green.
The plant grows to a height of around 15 cm, the flowers vary from around 7 - 11 mm in diameter. It can often be found growing on bare ground, grassland, and roadsides. Cerastium fontanum flowers from April to September.
