Ridge & Furrow lines

Ridge & Furrow lines

Description

Title:
Ridge & Furrow lines
Caption / Description:

The undulating pattern of a ridge and furrow field highlighted by the setting sun on a winter afternoon. Ridge & Furrow was a medieval method of farming where the land was farmed in strips. Due to the way the strips were ploughed, this ridge and furrow pattern was created.

The practice was abandoned after enclosure, but the ridge and furrow persists in fields used for pasture that have not been ploughed over.
