Ultraviolet photograph of a Aquilegia caerulea cv. Crimson Star flower. In UV the area of the corolla around the centre of the flower appears quite dark. The anthers also appear quite dark.
This contrasts with flower's appearance under visible light, where the star shaped flowers have deep red spurs, white corollas, and a tuft of yellow stamens.
Aquilegia caerulea is naturally found from the Rocky Mountains in Montana south to New Mexico and west to Idaho and Arizona. There are numerous cultivars available, the showy flowers making it a popular garden plant.
