Newly hatched tadpoles of the Common frog (Rana temporaria) rest on top of the frogspawn they hatched from. During spawning in early Spring, the female frog will generally lay around 1000-2000 eggs. The eggs are coated in jelly, and provide food for the young tadpoles. A few days after hatching the tadpoles move on to algae as a food source and the frogspawn jelly gradually disintegrates into the pond water.
