A male Delia Platura fly on a ragwort flower. The common name of Delia Platura is the Seed-Corn Maggot, its larvae are occaisonal pests of many vegetable crops including corn, kidney beans, peas, turnips, and cabbages.
The adult flies lay their eggs in ploughed fields, which hatch after 2-4 days. The larvae then burrow into the seeds, and also feed on the cotyledons (seed leaves) and first true leaves of the plant.
Although Delia Platura is native to Europe, it was introduced to America in 1865 and has spread rapidly across the USA, South Canada, and even to Hawaii.
