Hokoku Shrine, Osaka

Hokoku Shrine, Osaka

Description

Title:
Hokoku Shrine, Osaka
Caption / Description:

Hōkoku Shrine (豊國神社; Hōkoku-jinja) in Osaka Castle Park (大阪城公園; Osaka-Jō-Kōen), Osaka, Japan. The shrine is dedicated to Toyotomi Hideyoshi - the founder of Osaka Castle, his half-brother Toyotomi Hidenaga, and his son Toyotomi Hideyori. They are worshipped as spirits of success and fortune.

Originally built on the orders of the Emperor Meiji in 1879, Hōkoku jinja was constructed as a branch shrine of Kyoto’s Hokoku Shrine at Nakanoshima Azayamazaki-no-hana (the current location of the Osaka Central Public Hall). It was later moved to a location close to the Osaka Prefectural Nakanoshima Library, and then was moved again to the current location in 1961.
