The stone wall of Osaka castle's inner bailey and the skyscraper Crystal Tower provide a contrast between modern and old buildings in Osaka, Japan.
The Crystal Tower (クリスタルタワー; Kurisutaru tawā) is a 157m tall building, with 37 floors above ground level, and 2 basement floors. Located in Osaka Business Park (大阪ビジネスパーク Ōsaka bijinesu pāku) to the north of Osaka Castle, the building was completed in 1990. With its reflective glass covered walls, the building won the Building Contractors Society (BCS) award in 1992.
Osaka Castle (大坂城; 大阪城; Ōsaka-jō) was originally constructed in 1583, though much of the castle was rebuilt in the 1620s by Tokugawa Hidetada. He employed various samurai clans to rebuild the walls, which were constructed using large interlocked granite boulders with no mortar. Many of the stones had to be transported from quarries over 100km away to the castle site.
