Looking north along the west outer moat (西外濠; Nishi sotobori) of Osaka Castle (大坂城; 大阪城; Ōsaka-jō) from the bridge over the moat. On the right is Sengan turret (千貫櫓; Sengan-yagura), which is a designated Important Cultural Asset of Japan.
It is said that the turret got its name from the period before the castle was built, when the area was the location of the Ishiyama Hongan-ji fortress temple. The fortress was under siege by the forces of Oda Nobunaga for 11 years, and the Oda commanders offered a large amount of money - one thousand (千; sen) kan (貫), to anyone who could take this position.
Eventually the Oda forces did succeed in taking the fortress, and it was destroyed. Later, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the successor of Oda Nobunaga, built Osaka Castle on the site in 1583.
The large stones that make up the moat walls were transported over 100km to the castle location, and are held together without any mortar. The walls are nearly 30m high, and the outer moat is 70 - 90 metres wide, making for an impressive sight.
