Looking east along the south outer moat (南外濠; Minami sotobori) of Osaka Castle (大阪城; Ōsaka-jō), in Osaka, Japan. At the edge of the moat wall on the left is Rokuban-yagura (六番櫓), meaning the 'sixth turret' counted from the east of the castle. The two storey building was originally constructed in 1628, the fifth year of Tokugawa Iemitsu's rule as shogun.
The building was damaged in US air raids in 1945, when the castle was used as a miltary barracks. It was further damaged by a strong typhoon in 1950, but has since been restored and designated as an Important Cultural Asset by the Japanese government.
The steep walls of the moat rise about 30 meters high, and were constructed using huge blocks of stone with no mortar used to hold them together. The walls were built by various samurai clans in the 1620s, with the large blocks of stone being transported over 100km to the castle site.
