This monument marks the area near a pine tree where Rennyo is said to have hung his robe, in Osaka Castle Park (大阪城公園; Osaka-Jō-Kōen), Osaka, Japan. Rennyo was a Buddhist monk who retired to the area in 1496 and founded a small temple at this location. He gained many followers who came to live in the area, leading to the expansion of the temple.
The temple, called Ishiyama Hongan-ji (石山本願寺) became the primary fortress of the Ikkō-ikki, groups of commoners and monks who opposed samurai rule. However the fortress came under attack by the forces of Oda Nobunaga in 1570. After being under siege for eleven years and running out of food and weapons, the Ikkō-ikki surrendered to Oda in 1580. The fortress was burned down, according to some sources this was done by the Ikkō-ikki to deny Oda Nobunaga any material gains.
The successor to Oda, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, then went on to build Osaka Castle on the location of Ishiyama Hongan-ji three years later in 1583.
