Japsang on the roof of a building in Changdeokgung palace, Seoul, South Korea. Figures known as Japsang (Hangeul: 잡상; Hanja: 雜像) are traditionally found on the roofs of Korean Royal Palace buildings, and can also be found on the roofs of other buildings. Copying the Chinese Imperial roof decorations, the Korean roof decorations vary in that the statues are based on the classic Chinese story Journey To The West (Hangeul: 서유기; Hanja: 西遊記).
The sculptures were thought to ward off evil spirits, and were also used to signify the importance of a building - the more Japsang on a roof, the more important the building. The Japsang are located on the sloping roof hip, and arranged in a line.
