Donhwamun, the main gate of Changdeokgung Palace, in Seoul, South Korea. Changdeokgung was built as a secondary palace in 1405, and then used as the primary palace for Korea's monarchy from 1610 until 1868. Donhwamun was originally built in 1412, the 12th year of King Taejong, and then rebuilt in 1607, after it was burnt down during the 1592 Japanese Invasion.
The gate is the oldest existing main palace gate of Changdeokgung, and is located to the south-west of the palace, as Jongmyo Shrine had already been built in front of the palace. Donhwamun has a two-storey wooden structure with a stone foundation. The terrace in front of Donhwamun was restored in 1997, after the original terrace was paved over during the Japanese occupation of Korea.
