A bas-relief monument of the Korean independence movement at Tapgol Park (탑골 공원), Jongno-gu, Seoul, South Korea. This relief depicts a large group of women defying the Japanese police.

The protest against Japanese rule started on March 1st 1919 where the Korean Declaration of Independence was read in Tapgol Park. Other demonstrations soon followed across the country, which the Japanese police attempted to surpress. Over the year until the protests were finally quashed, around 7,000 people were killed, 16,000 were wounded, 715 private houses, 47 churches, and 2 school buildings were burnt down, and 46,000 people were arrested by the Japanese.
