There has been a ducking stool in Leominster since early medieval times. For minor offences, the offenders would be paraded through the town and then ducked in the river.
The ducking stool is mostly known for being used to duck cantankerous or nagging women, though it would also be used for ducking men, such as dishonest traders.
The last time the ducking stool was used for ducking someone was in 1809, when Jenny Pipes was ducked in the river Kenwater. It was also used in 1817 when Sarah Leeke was paraded around the town, but the river was too low for her to be ducked. Leominster was the last town in England to stop using a ducking stool.
