Philaenus spumarius, also known as the Common Froghopper or Meadow spittlebug, is a small sap-sucking bug, found across parts of North America, Europe, Asia, and Australasia. The colour and pattern of Philaenus spumarius is quite variable, with differing amounts of brown, black and white colouring.
In 2006 a study on the jumping habits of Philaenus species was issued by Prof. M. Burrows. The study found that, relative to body weight, the froghopper is the heighest jumping animal in the world. A froghopper can exert a jumping force of more than 400 times its body weight, while a flea can only exert 135 times its body weight.
