Boy Bishop carving

Boy Bishop carving

Description

Title:
Boy Bishop carving
Caption / Description:

The image of a boy Bishop is carved into the end of one of the choir benches, in the Parish Church of St Laurence, Ludlow, Shropshire, UK.

During the Middle Ages, a boy Bishop would take the place of the adult Bishop from St. Nicholas Day on 6th December, until 28th December, Holy Innocents Day. The tradition is said to be based on the young age at which St. Nicholas himself became a Bishop.
