A Palmer was a pilgrim who had been to the Holy Land, and brought back a palm branch as proof of their pilgramage. Most members of the Ludlow Palmer's Guild hadn't actually been to the Holy Land, but the Palmer's Guild owned about ⅓ of Ludlow at its height.
